What should you do if you encounter an aggressive dog?

On Behalf of | Mar 8, 2021 | Dog Bites

It can be scary if a dog approaches you whenever you’re walking, jogging or simply enjoying the great outdoors in Indiana. When dogs feel threatened, they may start to demonstrate aggressive behavior like growling, barking or crouching.

All dogs are capable of biting and causing serious injury. Read on to learn how you should respond if you encounter an aggressive dog.

Stay calm and don’t try to run

Many people become victims of dog bites because they panic and try to run away. Your first instinct may be to try to run away from a dog that makes you feel threatened. Unfortunately, this may only escalate the problem. Instead of trying to outrun a dog, try to remain still and calm. Take a deep breath, and back away slowly without turning your back on the dog.

Don’t make direct eye contact

Dogs may see staring as a direct threat, which may encourage the dog to attack. Avoid making eye contact. Never yell or raise your voice at a dog, either. Instead, use a soft tone that won’t spur on the dog’s aggressive behavior.

Use an item as a barrier between you and the dog

As soon as you notice a stray dog approaching, be proactive and think about what you can use to act as a barrier between you and the dog, such as a:

  • Backpack
  • Jacket
  • Bicycle
  • Handbag

If the dog is still able to bite you, never try to pull away, and never try to strike the dog. Try to remain as calm as possible and wait for the dog to leave. Otherwise, you could make the situation worse.

The best way to avoid an encounter with an aggressive dog is to always be aware of your surroundings. If the unexpected happens, follow the above tips to stay as safe as possible.
